Why buy an SSL certificate for your website?

SSL is the acronym for Secure Sockets Layer and is the Internet standard security technology used to establish an encrypted (or safe) link between a web server (website) and your browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, etc…). This secured link ensures that the data/information that is passed from your web browser to the web server remain private; meaning safe from hackers or anyone trying to spy/steal that info. SSL is the industry standard and is used by millions of websites to protect and secure any sensitive or private data that is sent through their website. One of the most common things SSL is used for is protecting a customer during an online transaction.

Are All SSL Certificates the Same?

The number of businesses that use SSL have increased tremendously over the past few years and the reasons for which SSL is used has also increased, for example: Some businesses need SSL to simply provide confidentiality (i.e. encryption), Some businesses like to use SSL to add more trust or confidence in security and identity (they want you to know that they are a legitimate company and can prove it). As the reasons companies use for SSL have become wider, three different types of SSL Certificates have been established:

This is the absolute highest level of security available to any website. The most trusted and secure choice for Web site security helps attract more customers to your site and gives them the confidence to complete their transactions, while enabling the strongest SSL encryption available to the most site visitors.

Customers Gain Confidence with the Green Address Bar

Online shoppers recognize the green address bar as an easy and reliable way to verify the site identity and security. Only SSL Certificates with EV trigger high-security Web browsers to display your organization's name in a green address bar. More confidence means more conversions for Symantec EV SSL customers who enjoy an average uplift of 17.8% (based on 32 case studies in 11 countries). SSL Security and Extended Validation

Extended Validation (EV) SSL Certificates are issued only when a Certification Authority (CA) checks to make sure that the applicant actually has the right to the specific domain name plus the CA conducts a very THOROUGH vetting (investigation) of the organization. The issuance process of EV Certificates is standardized and is strictly outlined in the EV Guidelines, which was created at the CA/Browser Forum in 2007, specifies the required steps that a CA must do before issuing an EV certificate:

  1. Must verify the legal, physical & operational existence of the entity
  2. Must verify that the identity of the entity matches official records
  3. Must verify that the entity has the exclusive right to use the domain specified in the EV Certificate
  4. Must verify that the entity has properly authorized the issuance of the EV Certificate

EV Certificates are used for all types of businesses, including government entities and both incorporated & unincorporated businesses. Takes about 10 days to issue. A second set of guidelines are for the actual CA and it establishes the criteria to which a CA needs to be audited before being allowed to issue an EV Certificate. It is called, the EV Audit Guidelines, and they are always done every year to ensure the integrity of the issuance process.

This is the second highest level of validation available.Organization Validation (OV) SSL Certificates are issued only when a Certification Authority (CA) checks to make sure that the applicant actually has the right to the specific domain name plus the CA does some vetting (investigation) of the said organization. This additional vetted company info is displayed to customers when the Secure Site Seal is clicked on, this gives enhanced visibility to who is behind the site which in turn gives enhanced trust in the site. Takes about 2 days to issue.

Domain Validation (DV) SSL Certificates are issued when the CA checks to make sure that the applicant actually has the right to the specific domain name. No company identity information is vetted and no information is displayed other than encryption information within the Secure Site Seal. DV certs can be issued immediately.

FaqFrequently asked questions

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and it's successor TLS (Transport Layer Security) are methods used to secure and encrypt sensitive information like credit cards, usernames, passwords, and other private data sent over the Internet. Website pages secured with SSL and TLS are those branded with the HTTPS in their URL address.

Anything (including people, software, computers, and devices) who exchange sensitive information on any network, including the Internet and Web, needs to use SSL/TLS. Sensitive information includes things like username and passwords, credit card numbers, or any other data that needs to be kept private.

Wildcard SSL/TLS allows the use of an unlimited number of subdomains in the SSL/TLS certificate. Any full domain that matches *.yourdomain.com (where * can be any word and yourdomain.com is your domain) will be secured by a wildcard SSL digital certificate. For instance, hostvision.com.ng, www.hostvision.com.ng, mail.hostvision.com.ng, and any other combination of hostvision.com.ng would be secured by a wildcard certificate issued to *.hostvision.com.ng.

The warranty protects the end user if an SSL.com Certificate is mis-issued (i.e. issued to a third party that was not entitled to the SSL Certificate).

The Green Bar EV SSL assurance increases customer trust and prevents cart/checkout abandonment by displaying the organization name of the EV SSL certificate through the address bar in the browser which turns green. The Green Bar is a feature of the EV SSL certificate and represents the highest level of trust offered by any SSL certificate authority.

The trial certificate allows for the customer to test the SSL installation and function of an SSL certificate. The free SSL certificate installs and functions identically to a standard SSL certificate, but it does not come with any warranty and the organization name of the website owner does not appear in the SSL certificate. Because of this, the trial SSL certificate is only meant as a test solution and does not build customer trust the way a standard SSL certificate would.

Depending on the certificate type, typical SSL issuance normally takes several minutes but can take up to several hours.

Subject Alternative Name certificates (commonly known as SAN SSL/TLS, Exchange Server Certificates, Unified Communications Certificates or UCC SSL) are SSL/TLS certificates that can secure multiple domains (including wildcard domains) in a single SSL certificate with a common expiration date. They are ideal for cloud services whereby the number of allocated ip addresses are limited yet must be shared with multiple virtual hosts. They are also ideal as Exchange SSL certificates for use in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, Exchange Server 2010, and MS Live Communications Server.
